&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;New page&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;Many of them were made of wood, having been collected back in the days before plastic choked the environment.   Types I remember:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# &amp;quot;Chinese puzzle boxes&amp;quot; which would be opened by slightly sliding sequential sides&lt;br /&gt;
# Metallic / wood puzzles designed to be taken apart&lt;br /&gt;
# A wooden puzzle with a penny inside.  To this day (Aug 2012), we haven&amp;#039;t solved it.&lt;br /&gt;
