Orange, tan and green note. "RESERVE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND" in serif capitals across the top left, with a large "5" below it. The right two-thirds is a three-quarter portrait of a smiling '''Sir Edmund Hillary''' in red-brown line engraving, labelled "SIR EDMUND HILLARY", set against vertical green and orange guilloche bands. The left panel holds a small colour vignette of a snow-covered mountain (Aoraki / Mt Cook) and, at bottom left, a faint tractor — his Antarctic Ferguson. Text reads "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR / FIVE DOLLARS". Signed "Donald T. Brash, GOVERNOR", which places the note between 1988 and 2002. The serial number is printed twice: vertically down the left edge and horizontally at upper right.
