Two nights ago I had a dream that I was aboard a cruise ship. It was a fabulous dream. What made it fabulous was the fact that the cruise ship contained within its decks a particular library that is a reoccurring element in my dreams because I like it so much. It has skinny, dimly lit staircases with just the right amount of dust to dampen footsteps without becoming an annoyance. They twist and make sharp corners and it is difficult to tell where they lead. This adds to the surreal sense of mystery and intrigue that permeates the library. It is also created by the fact that the corners of the more secretive rooms are perhaps not exactly square and some of the smaller, higher rooms have floors that are tilted to one side. In the lower levels of the library, the rooms are large, spacious, and well-lit by electric lights. In the dreams where other people have access to the library, they never venture past these lower floors. I, however, prefer to venture into the higher, darker rooms, which are smaller, some only a few feet square, what with the books completely covering each wall, and have no electric lights but instead are permeated by just enough light to read by. Interestingly, the rooms are not arranged into floors but are at all different levels. I have no idea how many rooms there are or how many levels, or how they are arranged. In my dreams I am continually exploring the twisting passageways of the library, uncovering new staircases, new rooms, whole new sections. It's the exploration that makes the library so great, even moreso than the books. All the books are old. Many have brown, fabric covers, some with titles, most (at least in the higher rooms where I spend most of my time) without them. Perhaps in the lower rooms, there are modern books. But I do not know of any, since I am rarely there. In fact, I don't know the title of any book in the library, though in my dreams, I am occasionally curled up, reading one. If you were really into dream symbolism and the like, you would probably interpret the library as a metaphor for my own mind or personality. There are many, many aspects of myself that I have no understanding of and I am continually exploring who I am. And other people know less of me still. So many people only see the surface I present to them and have no idea of really who I am. Perhaps I intentionally hide myself from people. Or perhaps people just don't really care about knowing me that well. At any rate, the library is a very good metaphor for my personality. Tilted floors? More than a few equivalents for that. The time I spend ensconced in the deeper rooms of the library, reading, thinking, isolating myself from the outside world... In fact, now that I write about it, I realize just how alike we are. I had no idea that I would make that connection when I started writing this.
