World Banknote Lot — item photo (leaving-Japan catalog)
South Korea 1,000 won — Yi Hwang (Toegye)
Mauve, lilac and dusty purple. At the right is a portrait of the Confucian scholar Yi Hwang (Toegye) in a tall black scholar's hat and pale robe, his dates set in tiny type beside the collar. The Korean text reads 한국은행권 (Bank of Korea note) at the top, 천 원 (one thousand won) large across the centre, and 한국은행 below, alongside a red circular seal. Left of centre is a pale green vignette of a celadon vessel and a hooded incense burner. "1000" appears in the corner areas and the serial twice, at upper left and lower right. Rainbow-toned guilloche and cloud motifs fill the middle ground. Photographed lying on a laptop keyboard, visible at the left and bottom edges.
Condition: well used — grimy and limp, with a hard centre crease and a creased, slightly torn lower-right corner.
Serial number: 가라라 6795491 (read from the photograph)
